Let’s be honest we know if you own horses you are gonna be spending money. That is not my issue. My issue is the farrier care. Their farrier’s charged 50 dollars for 15 min, that is 200 dollars an hour. My horse came home and my farrier was stunned at his feet (not in a good way) so be prepared to pay for subpar farrier care that your farrier will then have to fix. AND if you have their farrier talk to your farrier so yours knows what’s going on they will charge 50 dollar for the 15 min conversation. Also they don’t talk to you, so they are working on your horse without telling you ANYTHING. Essentially you will end up paying twice for farrier care since your farrier has to fix what they mess up. Absolutely ridiculous!

Unfortunately my horse didn't make it but they were so professional. Within 40 mins, I had so much info about what was happening inside. My horse colic and my vet said it wasn't bad in the am but as the day went on, it wasn't getting better and in my afternoon vet recheck she confirmed my horse was going the opposite way than she was in the am. I had my mother and two small children with me. They stayed in the car and after the euthanasia, I just drove away without the hair keepsake or the halter. I was so upset with myself. They sent me a package with both these things and handled my horse private cremation quick. Only thing I wish that would improve is the billing is taking a while. As someone who budgets, I really need to get it taken care of but still a week later and no bill yet.

My pony and I have had nothing but positive experiences dealing with her illnesses when we have been here. While the EMC is over an hour away from us, it's worth the trip to know that my pony will have the best care. While I hope neither of my horses ever have to to go the hospital again, if I ever do have another emergency situation that requires a hospital, I plan to take them here. It is nice to have peace of mind knowing there is a place like this in our area. They are there 24/7 for emergencies, and when you are in an emergency situation, the doctors have all been very understanding and reassuring, and willing to answer all of my questions. They also have always been accessible and communicative. So, while her first stay I was on pins and needles the whole time knowing she was so far away from home, the second time she had to stay, I knew she was in a great place that would take care of her, and that they would call me if anything came up. I think their pricing is reasonable - they give an entire breakdown of all of the costs, along with terrific discharge notes/instructions to refer to when you get back home (and will answer questions if things come up once you are back home). Something to keep in mind with any hospital (for person or animal!) is that it is going to cost a lot of money... you are in a hospital after all..... but for the care and services they provide, you are really getting your money's worth .... it would likely be much more expensive trying to handle the same care at home or boarding farm. To sum up, if you are located in the MD/VA area and in need of emergency care for your horse, I highly recommend this hospital.

This is the second time I used this facility and I think the quality of care is exceptional, as well as the nicest veterinarians work there. They are all eager to update you twice a day, so you never have to be worried about your horses. Tumps up for this hospital!

Don't bring family dogs here. The gray Haired receptionist hates dogs and won't be kind to them. Go somewhere else.

Short Version: DO NOT GO HERE. They are terrible about communication and overcharge for everything and do not follow through on promises.

They are the worst veterinary hospital that we have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. The doctors do not communicate with each other, the billing department, or us.
We were originally provided a quote, and told that they were going to contact us if it was going to go over that estimate. They did not contact us.
On the followup, we were provided a new, higher quote, and again, the same promise, and again, never contacted. And then again. The final bill they sent us was almost double the original quote. And we were told the vet would double-check us and be back in contact. They were not, until we received a nastygram bill in the mail

And the doctors we would see were not the doctors we spoke to on the phone, and the left hand did not know what the right hand was doing.

The only bit of good news was the horse is fine, but there are a number of better and cheaper equine hospitals in the area. Go to one of them instead.

I have taken my several horses to the EMC for over two decades for every emergency, surgery, and most diagnostics. I always feel that my horses are in the most careful, qualified hands. I am grateful many times over for this facility, the several times it has helped me avoid equine fatalities, treat unusual ailments, and many, many recent sports medicine assists by Dr. Maureen Kelleher with my aging OTTB sport horses. Dr. Mike Erskine has been my touchpoint in caring for many equine maladies and mysteries since he vetted my first horse 25 years ago. I am thrilled that he is now director and about all of the diagnostic, treatment, and facility upgrades made on his watch.
