I’ve lived in anchorage 50+ years and this is the best no-kill shelter in the state. They have separate areas for kittens, special needs, sick, and healthy energetic cats. My daughter used to volunteer here when trying to build up a resume. Remember them during PFD time

UPDATE: AHS made it right and my son went home with the kitty who had vision issues. Thank you, AHS, for making it right for him.

My son, who has an undiagnosed disability that prevents him from talking conversationally (suspected autism disorder), was denied adoption of a cat from AHS. He was heartbroken, then he was told that he didn’t list enough references and a volunteer overheard my son saying he was going to keep the cat outside… but my son doesn’t speak loud enough to be overheard by anyone, nor would he EVER keep his pet outside! He was told by this shelter that he’s better off adopting from the ACC instead of AHS. My son was heartbroken because he chose a special needs cat because they’re hard to find homes for ? ?
SHAME ON YOU, AHS!

Going to AHS is like going to therapy for me.

The cats are so well respected and taken care of—I'm pretty sure there's more volunteers on roster than cats. That feels SO good.

Everyone who exists in this space is friendly, empathetic, and knowlegable about cat behaviors and boundaries. They are kind to the cats and to the humans.

I could sit here forever with these cuties.

We have adopted two cats through this organization. They are a HUGE array of personalities and needs depending on the potential adopters needs and wants. They have people from young yearling cats to the old ones. They are all well taken care of. Their medical and grooming needs are well taken care of and when you visit the litter boxes are clean and the floors mopped. I would highly recommend this organization to any potential owners. They are VERY helpful to anyone new to cats, and even to more experienced people looking to add another cat to the family. The volunteers and everyone there truly want to find a perfect cat for you and are super helpful to work with. Also a lot of the cats just need attention so if you ever have an evening free, they have open visiting hours and you can just go spend time with some really cute floofs! I really can’t say enough good about this place.

It's nice getting to see the cats in a comfortable environment of their own. This allows you to see their personality a little better. It's a little hard to tell which cats might not be friendly but they do try to warn you and you can also ask someone beforehand. It is a nice set up for the cats though!

This place is completely volunteer run and they are so dedicated to the cats. It is a two story warehouse full of cats and smells like you would imagine a warehouse full of cats to smell. They help out the community, are honest about the disposition and health of their cats, and are very kind people. We adopted the sweetest cat I have ever met a couple months ago. She is 15 years old and they cared for her for three years before we got her. Like I said, so dedicated to these kitties. Ask to see their cats with medical needs if you’re up for a cat like that. They’re some of my favorites there. Thanks for all you do!
