I’ve never left a review on anywhere before but this place just upsets me….I took my daughters today for the first time in along time I’ve heard negative things about this shelter but I heard they got a new director so I gave it a try and the first thing I see in a puppy shivering by itself in a room very sad, I still have never been to a shelter where you can’t go in the back and see the dogs, all the rooms were shut off except 2 cat rooms, the building was pretty cold so Probaly why the puppy was shivering (I should’ve take a picture) and not one person even said hello or anything to us which is not the first time this has happened.. I guess we got there right before their lunch hour and then was there like 10 min into their lunch and I could just tell they were irritated and just worried about their lunch hour…. I used to walk dogs all the time at this shelter and I could tell everyone at the time loved their jobs and the animals anymore seems as if all the workers do it for a paycheck… very sad …definitely do not feel welcomed at all or anything

So many kitties just waiting for their forever homes. We didn't have time to look at the dogs available that day. They said they had 7 rooms of kitties. If you're thinking about a furbaby, stop by and see them. So many cute kitties!!

The community humane shelter of Steuben county is one of the best shelters that I've been to. In fact, I live in Michigan and I've adopted my animals from this shelter instead. Not only does the staff care immensely about the well-being of the animals, but the shelter is clean and well organized.

I would not let the reviews of people with personal vendettas skew your perception of the shelter. Instead I implore you to go check it out yourself, meet the staff, and take home one of your new best friends.

I generally never post bad reviews on sites, but I want to warn people about this place's behavior. My husband and I came to adopt a dog since we had finally gotten a place of our own. We went to the shelter a week ago and met a few dogs and we fell in love with one. We already had an approved application and they told us that we could take one home that day, but since we were in the process of moving we decided to wait. The shelter staff told us that they do not do holds for ANYONE. We knew the dog we wanted could be adopted before we came back and we were fine with that. The shelter staff even tried pressuring us to adopt the dog that day, but we didn't want the dog to come into a messy and chaotic house.

We came back today, right as they opened and asked them if the dog was still there. They said they were but she was being held for someone else to meet. I'm sorry what? I asked about their "no holding" policy in a polite way just in case I misunderstood it. But I was told and I quote "If you don't like it, then get out". My husband and I asked about the other dogs available and this woman refused to let us see them. We were told that we needed to wait until the other person was finished. Who wasn't even there yet, mind you.

We waited until another girl pulled us into a side room and started making excuses as to why we couldn't adopt a dog, saying the dog we met completely changed since we last met her a week before, or our application wasn't good, or that we needed to buy this or that. By this point I was fed up, but I didn't take it out on that girl because I work with the public and understand what they go through. So my husband and I left.

I was angry and confused as to what changed, until I headed towards our car and heard the lady who told us to "get out" tell a coworker that "ragheads" like me don't deserve a dog.

I'm not a raghead, I'm a Christian woman who covers her head for modesty. I'm used to being stared at for wearing a head covering, but that was new for me. And I was irate.

Friendly, super clean and doesn't smell bad. They did their best to help me find a pet, none seemed to click, will keep trying. Highly recommend this shelter.

Disappointed with the communication. We had come in last Saturday to see what dogs they had and meet some as we’re looking to adopt another, we found Yogi, we met him and instantly fell in love and thought he’d be a great fit, we were told to fill out on online application and they would call us since they were closed Sunday and Monday, not a problem, tuesday and wednesday roll around and i hadn’t heard anything so i left a voicemail wednesday night right before they closed as no one answered the phone. writing this Friday evening after still, no contact.

Edit to respond, you still could have called, to this day neither of us got a call. i would much rather you have called and talked, all we were waiting on was a go ahead from you to schedule a meet and greet with our dogs. With the fact that we were able to meet only one dog and apply online once leaving were not interested in coming back.

Got both of my babies here and it couldn’t have been a better experience.
Our first was Bianca (to which I wonder HOW could she have been passed up for so long, she’s the sweetest thing and LOVES to snuggle!)
Our second was actually the opposite what we were looking for but thanks to the workers, It was the best thing that happened to us!!

We adopted Danger and he’s been incredible.

We were looking for a kitten for Bianca to feel comfortable around, but after a worker suggested “you have to meet Danger, I show everybody Danger.”
WE FELL IN LOVE!

It’s been about 1 year since and both Bianca & Danger are a bonded pair!
They sleep next to or cuddle every night, eat & play together, groom each other, etc.
(Plus all my friends and family LOVE danger, he’s definitely the life of the party when we have guests!)

Seriously, Thank you all so much for gifting us these two sweethearts. (And yes, they are both definitely spoiled and heavily loved!)

Very impressed with this place.. am 68 yrs old, wanted a dog and they matched me right up with a great pal named Ringa. Special thanks to Anna at the counter for a great job! I recommend this place.
