My dog had to have an incredibly expensive emergency surgery and I’m so glad I took her to Duke for it. They were very empathetic about the situation and made it possible for me to afford the surgery. I also appreciated the consistent updates and check-ins while she was in surgery and after while she recovered. A couple months later, my guinea pig passed away and I was met with the same empathy and kindness. Every experience I’ve had here has been very personalized and genuine. I appreciate everyone at Duke so much !

Duke is simply the best vet in Chicago. No matter which Dr. you see (we've seen nearly everyone there!), you and your pet are absolutely guaranteed to get such thorough, compassionate, and timely care from their doctors, vet techs, and staff. Going to the vet is almost never fun for anyone involved, but we so deeply trust the team at Duke and are so grateful to them for how much they've helped us and our sweet Pepper!

Most supportive and accommodating animal hospital I've ever encountered.

I have been in the vet field on and off for 5 years now. As a pet owner and vet tech, I have been wildly impressed. My pet rats visit Duke and I would rather not bring them elsewhere. They have superb communication, amazing client support, and do their best to make sure your pet gets seen in a timely manner. I can usually get an appointment within a few days and never had to wait very long in the exam room. Although they are not an specialized exotics clinic, Dr. Sadler works well with my rats and it's clear he does his homework. I was also blown away by Christina, the end of life support technician. I have never felt more supported and cared for during a euthanasia. Sometimes these values and experiences can be hard to find in the field.

Also, they always have la croix in the fridge. A+ clinic.

Duke is absolutely incredible, and I would recommend them to all my friends.

The staff is incredibly welcoming and always treat my pup like a princess. The doctors are also very knowledgeable and informative, and have always been transparent when it comes to prices.

They have been very accomodating to my excitement reactive pup, and will often politely ask other clients to give her space to come through, or inform me when the lobby is clear of pups.

In addition to all this, they are always incredibly accomodating with scheduling appointments, and make a genuine effort to fit me in when necessary.

Only 10/10 experiences for me at Duke!

I have never come across a veterinarian establishment like Duke. They truly go above and beyond, and make you and your pet feel like family. When we lost our sweet 2 year old cat to an undiagnosed terminal illness, the entire staff reached out personally with a signed card, and made a donation in his name to veterinary research. I have nothing but thanks and goodwill for these fine professionals.

I recently had a disappointing experience at Duke Animal Hospital that I feel compelled to share. While I have had positive interactions with the front desk staff in the past, my visit on January 28, 2025, at 1:30 PM left much to be desired.

I accidentally arrived early for my appointment (2 hours), owned the scheduling oversight, and politely inquired if there was an option to be seen sooner. I even suggested checking in as an emergent visit to avoid making another trip on the same day. However, the receptionist didn’t even bother to get up from her chair to check with the medical staff or explore whether this could be accommodated. Instead, I was met with a dismissive attitude and a lack of effort to find any solution. From a rhetoric perspective a "sorry we'd love to but we're absolutely slammed today..." would have gone a long way.

The front desk staff on this day seemed apathetic and unengaged. As if they didn't even want to be there or that if one other person were to come into the clinic, it would be so inconvenient for them. One of them stared at me with a smug expression, and the employee whom I was conversing with at the front desk adopted an unprofessional "you're out of luck" attitude. It was clear that finding a solution or providing empathetic customer service was not a priority for either of them.

As someone who has established care here after moving to Chicago, this was a disappointing departure from the level of service I had previously experienced. As an investor and business owner myself, I know how critical it is to hire staff who embody a solutions-oriented and empathetic approach—especially in an industry where clients are entrusting the care of their beloved pets. Unfortunately, the sentiment I encountered today would leave any prospective or existing client questioning their choice in veterinary care.

I hope this feedback prompts some reflection and improvements in staff training and customer service. Clients come to veterinary clinics looking for care and understanding, and it’s essential that this starts at the front desk.

Had an extremely negative experience here a few years ago, that in retrospect, makes me extraordinarily angry. I brought my cat in for a regular checkup, because she was having excess hairballs. Dr. Coulombe misdiagnosed her with a heart murmur because her heartbeat was "too slow." On record, her heartbeat was a normal rate for a cat, but because she was in a vet's office, they determined that she should have "been more scared", and therefore "have a higher heart rate." Now that murmur hasn't been seen in ANY of the vet appointments I have had since then at a different vet, but it definitely exists on her medical records and my pet insurance is higher because of it. As soon as Dr. Coulombe told me about this mysterious "murmur," she had the tissues AT THE READY for when I started to cry from concern, and then at the end of the appointment she FORGOT ENTIRELY about why I even came– to recommend treatment for hairballs! They wanted to schedule an extremely expensive echocardiogram for WHAT? A kitty heart valve replacement They just want your money, and don't care if it leaves you in tears. This place disgusts me.
