I had hip replacement surgery last week. From the check-in, preparation, surgery, recovery and one night stay, everyone did their part in a thorough, professional and kind manner. My pain was well/managed and explained to me and my husband. Even the meals and snacks were good! I felt very safe and cared for.

If I could give Health First Viera Hospital zero stars, I would. My experience with their billing and support services has been nothing short of a nightmare.

For months, I have been trying to resolve a billing issue that should have been quick and simple to handle. Instead, I’ve been bounced between different departments, two separate billing companies (neither of which seems to know what the other is doing), and an unresponsive hospital staff. Repeated phone calls to the hospital either went unanswered or led to voicemail boxes that were full. Imagine calling the ER at night and going straight to a full mailbox and then hung up on! Wow! Emails to the suggested contact addresses such as [email protected] and [email protected] were ignored, and when someone finally did respond, they failed to follow up or provide any actionable assistance.

The hospital appears to be severely understaffed and poorly managed. No one seems to have a clear understanding of how to handle billing inquiries, and communication across departments is abysmal. The fact that I had to spend months just trying to get someone to respond to me—and still haven’t received a resolution—shows a complete disregard for patient care and customer service. This is in addition to the fact that I'm getting collection messages from an auto attendant via phone, while ruining my credit because they are too lazy or inept to bill my insurance company with the correct billing codes.

It’s shocking that a healthcare provider with such substantial resources (a revenue of $4.5 Billion in 2023 with a large net gain) can operate with such inefficiency and lack of accountability. This hospital desperately needs better leadership and an overhaul of its billing and support systems. Until then, I would caution anyone considering their services to think twice if they expect anything resembling competent or responsive follow-up.

Recently, I had hip replacement surgery at Viera Hospital and my experiences there were 5-star all the way. From check-in, to prep, surgery, recovery, overnight stay, meals and check out - the doctors, nurses, and staff all did their upmost for my medical care and comfort. Should it become necessary, I would not hesitate being admitted to Viera Hospital, or recommending it to others.

What a blessing to have such a quality hospital in our community! Thank you Health First and your professional team at Viera Hospital.

I wish I could give a zero star for this hospital. The E.R. Dr. Cross is absolutely the rudest, non-caring Dr. I have ever encountered. He doesn't listen to you at all and smacks chewing gum the entire time. Don't come here if you expect to be cared for and treated in a humane manner.

I only gave him one star because I had to. Went in for extreme pain due to kidney stones. Was told that I didn't have kidney stones and yet I passed the kidney stones two days later at home. I've experienced kidney stones since the age of 10 years old and I know when my body has one. They ignored my pain and sent me home. I'm not sure if they're incompetent in finding kidney stones or if they've just never seen them before. But either way, I wouldn't trust this facility with my health when they can't even find kidney stones Which are pretty simple to locate and to treat. I'd avoid this place if you have health issues

Regarding the birthing suites:
Everyone on staff here is amazing. Every nurse was so informative and caring. I had a rough time having my baby and they were all so sweet the entire time. Alexus was my favorite (sorry lol), she really stayed informative and to the point while also caring about me and my well being. She was naturally intuitive and smart. But everyone we encountered were amazing. Lynette, Jojo, Natalie, Stephanie, Beth, there are so many great nurses here. They treat you like family. Even though it was a rough time for me and I wanted to go home more than anything, I felt like my care was taken seriously and I needed their help to be ok for my baby. Every person we encountered were also so so nice, like dining, and housekeeping, transport, and just EVERYONE. I learned so much being a first time parent as well! You guys are definitely doing something right with the hiring process.

The only thing I can be critical on is I wish there was a window in the day that all of the other people like social security, lab work, photos, extra things like this were all coming in instead of random times. It was hard to get any sleep when you really need it. But that is seriously my only con and not a deflection from the wonderful employees all over the hospital.

Regarding the er:
Although of course I did not want to be here, Nicole made my stay as best as possible. She was so informative, caring, and knowledgeable. I felt extremely well taken care of by her and the rest of the team. I was very upset and in crisis and she helped me every step of the way. Honestly everyone was so great. Great bedside manner by everyone. Clear communication on everything that had to be done to help me. The entire hospital has done an amazing job on staffing employees that genuinely want to help and do their best. Thank you!!!

Both myself and my husband have bills on a payment plan and even though we are both current and the payment plans are only a couple months old this hospital has decided to send our bills to collection. Now we have to spend Christmas disputing with the collections agency and Health First billing department.

My husband has sickle cell and Leukemia; we have to go often for full exchange transfusions to this specific facility, because; they treat him with no judgment, very attentive to detail, very thorough specialists, when patients are overwhelmed and having issues, they find solutions INSTEAD of discharging them after immediately, allow family to come all hours, even very accommodating to our service pet, food is very nutritional and good tasting, and as I said, they were very elaborate with testing and ordered outside 3rd party to come for full blood exchange transfusions, now 7 times. Helping us fight for him to live and have a life as much as we want and are. Very reassuring, supportive and accomodations. Highly recommend!
