Recently adopted this handsome man, Jake. He’s been in his forever home for only a few days and is already making himself at home. The staff at the East Campus location are all so great. They took the time to go over Jake’s medical records, and addressed his previous history. I highly recommend anyone looking to adopt that you visit HARP.

I hope the rescue and future pet owners read this. Just a warning from experienced cat and dog owners. This is a tad long, not spoken out of hate but important.

My boyfriend and I recently went here to find a kitten to bond with my little over a year female cat. We preferred a female to bond with her since it might be an easier transition for her but we’re open to a male if he fit what we wanted for a bonding pair. We first went to the North Side, Humane Society and found a male kitten of which we considered but wanted to check other places first. They recommended that we go to the Hamilton Ave, Humane Animal Society since they had female kittens which could interest us.

We found one that was perfect there. Our kitten was labeled as a female. They told us they would do a spay surgery after the adoption. They called us 20 minutes after we left after the next day and told us about his neuter surgery. This is the right kitten btw we checked. This was disappointing to us since he was mislabeled everywhere in his paperwork and shelter. We tried to call them a few times after the fact to just address our concern about what we went though but unfortunately they acted rude and said this it is easy to miss mix up and we can return him. As experienced pet owners of past dogs and cats, at 2/3 months of age which he was labeled, this should be addressed different. We are not that type of people to return pets for any reason so that will not happen and we are happy with him since he chose us as well.

We just wanted to express our concerns as experienced pet people to future pet parents. Luckily, my female seems to be slowing adapting to him in the last couple days as he is kept in another room for the moment for the beginning bond experience. This could have been a very different experience if we had a male cat and male kitten.

We understand that these places are run a lot by volunteers and you want the pets adopted to awesome families. Information should be clear as possible though.

Overall, the lady who helped us in the shelter and the surgery manager were very kind, respectful, and supportive. We also had good experience here besides mislabeled issue.

We hope to help future pet parents just to check the gender fully so nothing happens with your fur babies.

Here is Oliver (which we changed since he is a male). He is sweet and very vocal. 🙂 The first picture is bit blurry since he had cat zoomies that night haha. Added some new ones of him when he got adjusted to my fur baby and our home.

We found three kittens. We were willing to adopt two, but, didn't know what to do. Turns out, these babies were only a week old. They were so helpful! There was no way we were prepared to care for these babies. They explained to us how they would require round the clock attention. They'd have to be syringe fed, stimulated to toilet and kept warm. They let us stay as long as we needed as they got the kittens settled and prepared for fostering with a trained human. I'm so glad we took them in. It was the right thing to do.

I can not say enough good things about this organization!! Thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart!! Angels!! Took my cat in an emergency health situation when others turned me away and gave me the run around. They took in my cat and with a skeptic heart, I allowed them to take my cat in as a surrender in order to get him the quickest care. They promised to return him if he recovered. Two days later they called and said we could pick him up!! Amazing girls at that office too! So nice!

They were very pleasant when we brought our 22 year old dog in to have her euthanized. The only thing was they didn't let us go back when they did it. They took her back and that was that. But for some like myself and my mother, it was definitely easier.
