A Refuge for Furry Friends

My dog Hunter recently had a short stay at the La Plata County Humane Society. At first, I was worried that Hunter was going to have severe separation anxiety and generally be miserable due to being kenneled. I needn’t have worried. He was the same happy go-lucky pup at the Humane Society as he was at home. Very comforting!!

I was really amazed by the compassion and care shown to my Hunter and all the other animals. It was if all the animals and staff were family. Incredible! The staff is also very passionate about finding loving homes for these deserving creatures.

The facility is clean and well-maintained, and most importantly, the animals are “WELL LOVED”. I highly recommend The La Plata County Humane Society to anyone looking to adopt a furry friend or support a great cause.

We’ve adopted from LPCHS six times since moving to Durango 12 years ago. Each of our babies has been so well cared for until their adoption time, and the staff has always been so helpful in helping us find our perfect match! We now volunteer as fosters, as well, and everyone there is so supportive and encouraging. So grateful for the good people of LPCHS! We’re fortunate to have this shelter in our community!

The La Plata County Humane Society is a truly wonderful Humane Society. Their cat room is open for people to go in and "love on" the kitties, and I go there often to give the cats the attention and love that they need. The staff are helpful and clearly care dearly about the animals. I was able to foster for them a few years ago and I loved the experience. Below is a picture of me with my favorite kitten, Zoodle. I got my two cats from them, and the adoption experience was great.

I love my new family and am really coming into my self, my new parents take me everywhere, we walk twice a day, I help my mom with watering and yard work, and my dad with managing my herd of horses and of course learning to take my cues from my brother Roper ( Red Heeler), best of all I know that I have a forever home and I am loved, it makes all the difference in a dogs world you know. Thanks to all my family and friends at LPCHS who helped me along the way and get me to a good home. Buddy

We got our sweet girl from here and have had her for a year. Their dog handler asked questions about our lifestyle/household and suggested dogs that I hadn’t even considered. He brought out this huge-headed scary-looking dog that had been curled up in the corner facing the wall. Once she got out of the kennel, she completely transformed and melted our hearts. She is the very best girl and fits perfectly into our life. This Humane Society wants to make sure the animal find the right fit in their new home.

I’ve worked in greyhound rescue for about 30 years and in that time, I’ve dealt with numerous shelters across the country. Recently, I worked with the La Plata County Humane Society to help a greyhound mix in their shelter. I had the opportunity to interact with several different people at the shelter and everyone I spoke to was friendly and helpful. By far, the best shelter I’ve ever worked with!

What a great place to find an animal that needs a home! I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience in adopting two feral cats to keep our barns mouse free?from LPHS. I had never even had a cat before (dog person here) and was nicely educated about what to expect. After 4 months the cats are now letting me pet them and have done a marvelous job at clearing out the mice and other rodents. In the process I have made 2 little friends ?‍⬛ Thank you Lexie and LPHS staff for what you do!
