I recently took my dog to the vet for a fractured nail, and I was absolutely shocked by the bill—over $1,300! Initially, I was just concerned about my dog's wellbeing, as she was limping, bleeding, and clearly in pain. Without doing any research beforehand, I anticipated a cost somewhere in the range of $300 to $500. To my astonishment, my fiancé returned with a bill that left me speechless.

Naturally, I started to doubt my initial calculations. Curious if I was misinformed, I turned to ChatGPT for guidance on what to expect in terms of veterinary costs for a broken nail. The results confirmed my instinct—veterinary treatment typically falls between $100 and $600. Surprised by this validation, I decided to dig a bit deeper. After reviewing several websites, it became increasingly clear that most reputable sources agree on this price range for similar cases.

To add to my frustrations, the invoice listed 14 different charges, including examination fees, treatments, medications, and others, which collectively led to that exorbitantly high total. Here are some insights I found during my research:

Dogster.com suggests that the costs range from around $32 to $63 for simple cases, plus additional veterinary costs that could reach $300 to $500.

PetMD indicates that expenses could be less than $100 or extend into the hundreds, depending on the required treatment.

Metlife Pet Insurance estimates that treatment for a broken nail might cost around $200 to $300, considering elements like the initial examination, sedation, and required medications.

Given this context, I can’t shake the feeling that the pricing I encountered is not just high but questionable in terms of ethics and legitimacy. If someone else is considering this vet for similar issues, I strongly recommend researching other options where you could potentially save hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Here is a breakdown of my invoice:
Fractured/Broken Toenail Repair and Nail Trim - $221.39
Bandage and Dressing Application - $84.09
SpO2 Monitoring - $147.58Sedation - $240.58
Sedation Reversal - $64.16
In-Patient Care, per hour - $65.95
Carprofen Injection, cc - $46.75
Carprofen 100 Mg Tablets - $56.45
Buprenorphine 0.6 mg/ml Injection, cc - $76.80
AmoxiClav 250 mg Tablets - $114.00
Gabapentin 300 mg Capsules - $42.36
Elizabethan Collar 25 cm - $34.00
Office Visit - Scheduled Illness - $97.43
OSHA Compliance Bio-hazard Disposal Fee - $9.94
Invoice Total $1,301.48

Dr. Siva has taken such amazing care of my dog.
We had a scare of possible cancer back in September and he did the surgery the next day to remove her mass.
He understands that she is my baby and she loves seeing him!
I will always recommend Dr. Siva. Thank you for taking such amazing care of my girl!

The clinic is very clean, and professional. The doctor was very thorough about explaining things, and they were very honest about what to expect with our upcoming procedure. They ALWAYS give you price estimates before anything you schedule, so you know the ballpark of what you'll be paying. This is my go to place for all three of my animals now. Great people!

I love PetVet Animal hospital. Not only have they met all my dog’s needs well, but the doctors and staff are very friendly and genuinely care about animals, not just clinically, but relationally. They always make my yorkie feel like he is their favorite animal in the world. Also, importantly, it does ever feel like an environment of herding us in and out. They take time with you.

I took my dog in after being neglected by her previous vet and she needed surgery. Taylor was able to get me in for the initial appointment and the surgery within 2 days of each other and she was very helpful! I'm super grateful to the whole team for taking care of my baby and her huge bladder stones! It's wonderful to know that I have somewhere to take my baby where she will be in good hands (and enjoy cuddles from the staff)!

My little Chihuahua, Sophie, has a serious heart condition. She has always been afraid of the vet. The staff at PetVet were just wonderful with her. I was anxious as well. They took the time to explain and answer all of my questions. I highly recommend!

We chose PetVet Animal Hospital provide care for our newly adopted cat. They were very helpful & patient with my many questions. Dr. Balasundar Dodda
Veterinarian, DVM, MVSc, PhD provided care for our new cat. To be honest, there was a slight language barrier but the techs were very helpful in clearing up any possible confusion. We were very pleased with the techs attention to detail and knowledge. We have also worked with Veterinarian, Serena Nayee, at the emergency vet next door and she was fabulous! This was during an emergency situation with our elderly cat. Her calm, professional and informative demeanor certainly helped during a stressful situation.
