I went in to ask about their volunteer program and came out adopting a dog. I adopted “Wally”, a 1-year-old corgi mix and have renamed him “Mannix” He’s really sweet and the staff were really helpful in the adoption process

I took 2 kittens to them , they turned me away because I'm not from Pocatello. Referred me to the bannock county humane society, but didn't tell me they are only open from 7pm to 8pm on Wednesday only. Called and a recording gave the ours to call. When Wednesday came around , the line didn't ring only a busy signal. I will never try to save an animal in this area again.

I adopted a 15 year old cat named "Cocoa". He is very sweet and extremely fragile. I think he is almost blind and very hard of hearing. He loves to cuddle and is a very good boy! The staff at the shelter were very professional and super nice. I had a great experience there!

Just adopted Missy from the shelter a few days ago. Her owner had a stroke and his daughter surrendered her without his knowledge. She’s a sweet heart and seems to be happy with the other dogs. Over all the shelter took really good care of her.

We adopted a 12 year old pup with challenging medical issues last week. We are so appreciative of the care Pocatello Animal Services gave this dear dog, and we are impressed and grateful for their honest assessment of the significant veterinary costs, the patience, and the extra rehabilitative care she would need. They asked us many questions to determine whether we were truly ready to take these things on, whether we were sincerely committed to adopting a special needs pet. We filled out a questionnaire to help them confirm that we could provide a safe and comfortable environment for her. We did not feel judged for being questioned-- quite the opposite! All adoptions service institutions should do it the way PAS does! Pet ownership is a huge responsibility, and, despite best intentions, not every lifestyle is conducive to it.

Because PAC was honest with us, we could adopt Biscuit (shelter name: Karen) with full knowledge of what we were taking on. She is scheduled for major dental surgery and mammary tumor removal. These things would have been expensive surprises, if not for the honest medical assessment and full disclosure we received. We work at home and have adopted senior dogs with medical needs before, so we were a particularly good fit for Biscuit, who also struggles with separation anxiety.

We found the front desk staff and Deb (a wonderfully caring volunteer) polite, efficient, and (most importantly) committed to doing a very difficult job well. The facility is impeccably clean and the pets are well tended. My husband and I interact with my elderly parents, so we also appreciate how thoughtful and conscientious the staff was about requiring masks and social distancing in this time of COVID. Everyone we saw wore a mask. Clearly, PAS approaches the pandemic with the same selflessness, logic, compassion, and realism that guides their adoption process. Five stars, for sure! And thank you, Poky Shelter, for saving our beloved little Biscuit!

Came in today to bring back a dog I adopted a week ago, because he was extremely aggressive with my cats. I loved him so much and just want the best for him. Upon arrival after calling to ensure everything was in order, a lady greeted us by the name of “Deb”. We explained we had called about bringing him back. Her response was “oh poor buddy just too much for them huh” we said no it’s not like that at all. “You were just too much for them.” We corrected her and said “no actually, he was just aggressive with our cats.” She said “and did you tell us you have cats?” We told her yes. She then said “well it’s in their breed to be aggressive towards cats!” Like seriously? Questioning whether or not we were truthful to the shelter before adopting him and then assuming we’re bringing him back because he is a high energy dog? Seriously ridiculous. We are not bad people for needing to protect our animals and wanting the dog to go to a better fitted home, and what Deb said implied that we are. Extremely unprofessional and just simply rude. It’s hard to want to adopt from the shelter when she was very discouraging.

They’ll let you adopt an animal, but they sure don’t let you return it when it’s one you got from them… that they neglected to inform me of her serious seizure disorder… AND with it still being within the first few days of bringing her home (their own return timeframe).

According to the emergency vet ($1300 cost on the 1st day I had her); “there’s no way the animal shelter didn’t know about her seizures since they are so frequent and severe”.

I’m not donating another dollar or pet supply to this waste of tax payer dollars.

I fought with this place for OVER A YEAR. If they would’ve told me about her severe health issues that they should’ve noticed (she was there for several months), and I still adopted her, that’s on me to accept responsibility for her increased costs of meds, vet visits, and tests, but these people purposely left that part out, and then refused to take her back, which left me in debt with all her medical bills. I never would’ve adopted the dog had I known about her medical issues.

Luckily found a place to rehome her, but I urge everyone to think carefully before adopting any animal from this place. They are completely negligent, dishonest, and unethical about how they “take care of” the animals and the way they decide to not follow their own policies and how they deal with adoptive families.
