The best part of this place was their embracing empowerment class. Even then it was mandatory and if it got in the way of your work schedule then there was no flexibility there. If you have a strong personality they will target you and do everything they can to push you out of their facility. My experience with them is that they stuffed 8 people into an 4 person bedroom. When I was pregnant and on bed rest due to a subchorionic hemorrhage, many of the staff members there told me that if I can’t take care of my 2 other children with the lifting and the bending that I can’t live there. This place did not help me or allow me to heal from the trauma of abuse. They made me feel cornered, helpless, and suffocated all over again. They are abusive in their own ways. They aren’t any better than any other shelter. This place is generous with helping you meet your basic material and physical needs. But when it comes to allowing you to find peace after being hurt by someone… that’s not what I experienced here. Their purpose is to house you temporarily and that’s it.

I was there in the late 00’s . I would not be able to be where I am without this place. I went back five times. My son who was 5 told me to go back to the shelter and I did. Best advice my now 20 year old son ever gave me. It was the fifth and final time.

I stayed here about 8 months with my 2 children back in 2015. It is a very nice shelter. Very clean, up to date, and they have everything you need in a crisis situation. You can stay as long as you need to. Most of the staff there are friendly and comforting and professional. They offer classes and resources to help get you back up on your feet after leaving an abusive situation. My favorite was their Embracing Empowerment class. The course is 12 weeks -I think. It was eye opening for me and much recommended. However this place is only intended for a temporary stay. When I was staying there it was really over crowded -and after a while some of the other residents there especially the ones that have been living there for 2-3 yrs tend to be favored towards and there can be drama. You also got to be very careful how you handle your children because staff will not hesitate to call cps over about any incident. I understand though they do have a job to do to protect everyone. If you already have an open investigation or have a court case going on prior to checking in -you're probably better off going someplace else sooner rather than later. Staff and residents alike will be harder on you and will keep tabs depending on your history. They will watch for you to make any mistakes and consider you as untrustworthy. Don't get me wrong I loved my stay there but there was also some downfalls too. It certainly outweighs staying with an abuser though. This place was my haven for a little while and my stepping stone out and away from my abuser. I still would recommend this place to anyone trying to leave an abusive and dangerous situation.

I love the staff and my friends I've gained from Sheltering Wings. I miss them all dearly. I learned a lot about myself and my past trauma while being there. I wish I could go back there, but all beds are full.
