I did not take my pet here my review is based on a phone interaction with the office manager. My cat, Twinkie, has been missing for a few days and we hung flyers. The evening of 12/4 an individual called me from a private number to tell me that someone brought my cat to the St Elmo pet clinic and that she would need surgery because she’d been hit by a car. St Elmo is about 4 hours from my home, so I thought this was strange but I was happy that my cat had been located. The caller wanted me to verify significant features of the cat, which I did. He tells me my cat needs surgery because she’d been hit by a car. I asked him if he could send a picture of the cat so that I could verify it’s her. He said he could not because of privacy reason. (I don’t recall pets having HIPAA rights). His responses raises strong suspicions. But I continue to speak with him and ask him about the cost of the surgery. He tells me one amount but if I sign up for pet care it would be discounted. He tells me that they do not accept cash, credit, or debit. That I would have to set up a bill account at something like a money gram”. He then tells me if I don’t pay by the time the 2 hour surgery is over he will get paid by the state and my pet would be put up for adoption. I tell the guy this sounds very much like a scam. And he tells me that if it’ll help he’d call me from the number posted for the clinic on google,618-829-3988. AND HE DID! I tell him move forward with the surgery but I’m not sending any money and I’ll call the office tomorrow morning during regular hours. However that evening I called the emergency number posted on the clinics website, 319-730-7782, and the individual that answered indicated he could not verify if my pet was in the office and I should call in the morning. THIS IS WHERE MY GRIEVANCE OFFICIALLY BEGINS. I call the number online ending in 3988 which is busy each time I call. I go to the clinics Facebook page and there is a post from 2 days ago indicating the phones and internet were down and customers should call an alternate number (618) 725-9559. I call and ask to speak with the office manager and the young lady advises she is the office manager. I ask her if she has my cat. She indicates she doesn’t think so. I give her a quick recap of the events from the night before and emphasize about them calling from the clinic’s number. She apologizes and specifies that individuals clone numbers. And doesn’t ask any follow up questions. From my research I can tell this is a small family owned practice so I would think more concern would be shown upon the knowledge that someone is compromising the integrity of their business. I also think it should be a concern that their internet and phone is down the day after someone has taken over the phone. I post this long review with hope that the owner will see and further research the issue with their phones. This is also to raise awareness of the scam victimizing individuals seeking their lost pets. Thank you

My 2 year old cat was hit by a truck and I brought her to be saved, but in just 2 days the veterinarian called me and wanted to put her down. She told me that it would not matter to my cat if I came one last time and saw her because she lost interests in life. I came in to see her 1 last time but when I came to get my cat she recognized me instantly and came to me gladly and when I got her finally home, since 2 days wasn't enough time to heal her obviously come on 2 days and she wanted to kill my favorite girl in the world the only creature that has any love in the entire vet clinic was about to be killed by the doctor for not drinking water. When I got her home Smoke went straight to the house she was so excited to be home and straight to her water bowl where she stayed drinking water 1 eyeball left, which was the opposite of the information that the clinic called me for trying to kill my love after just 2 days chance of healing. The vet said they still need to take her eye out one day regardless and as if that would make me want to kill her too. I was like "Stop trying to take her eye, this is my f cat, I'm wanting to hold her again!" Gladly today 1 month later, Smoke jumps on the top of my refrigerator again in just 1 month. Now her eye is almost completely healed up and she looks almost original and she still sleeps with me and has many more years to be my only love in the world left. Now to mention that after paying $155 of a $305 vet bill, I got Smoke home yet it killed 2 of her daughters the virus Smoke was infected with there at the clinic she caught Parvo and brought it back to the house killing her only 2 female daughters that were 5 months each old. I paid $305 to get told my cat needs to die and to bury her 2 kittens thanks to St elmo veterinarian clinic. Needless to say, the rest of the bill well I didn't believe 1 word on the bill after that experience! My family is half dead now for a lot of money. Next time you try to take my family members, you may want to wait more than 2 days before you tell me no chance of living

I decided to write something after thinking over for a couple months...
I've had great experiences with this clinic in the past (I brought my animals here since I was in school/living with my parents) but this one time has ruined everything.
I called the clinic and requested an appt for my older cat (14 years+). I told them she wasn't eating, lost significant weight, and no energy. I was upfront with them that I wasn't sure if she was actually "ill" or just "older" and it was "her time to pass" but I wanted her to be checked out in case it was something we could fix. They didnt have any openings but offered for me to drop her off and they would call me when they had time to examine her. I dropped her off in the morning and got a call later in the afternoon. She informed me she had pancreatitis. She felt with some iv fluids and appetite stimulants she might turn around and wanted to keep her overnight. I was frank with her that I didnt want my cat to suffer but if she wasnt going to pull through, I wanted to let nature take its course and not prolong things. I allowed them to keep her overnight. They called me later morning/early afternoon the next day to tell me there wasn't much improvement but that she was still responding and interested when they were caring for her. I asked again about her prognosis and their thoughts on her pulling through and was very transparent that I did NOT want to pay $500+ on extra care when she was not showing improvement. I told her I was ok w bringing her home and allowing her to pass with us by her side but she requested to keep her one more night to see if there was a change. I asked her about the price so far...she told me around $300. I asked what another night would cost...she said maybe $40 more. I decided to let her stay 1 more night w plans to bring her home the next day with hopes she may have some improvement. The next day, she called and said no improvement was made and that I could come get her and bring her home but to expect her to pass (sooner than later) or I could euthanize her (which I have done in the past w a previous animal that was suffering). But she informed me that she didn't believe my cat was in any distress at the time & I decided to bring her home after she ensured me I could bring her back if things changed. When I picked her up, I was handed a $600!!!! BILL! When I questioned it and told them it wasn't the price we discussed on the phone I was brushed off...no big deal! Here's your dying cat! (They didn't say that but that's what it felt like.) Not a "I'm sorry" or "what can we do to help." I paid the bill and walked out with my dying cat. Within a week, she passed. I do not regret bringing her home- she loved being with her family- that was very clear until the end of her life. My only regret, allowing them to keep her for so long and handing over that kind of money when we were accepting of her passing naturally, at home. Why were they not transparent with what it was going to cost Who does that?!

I found an blind, old emaciated dog that had been abandoned and had fallen down a bank into a creek and couldn’t get out. I called every Vet Clinic around trying to find someone to help me with her. They got her right in. I appreciate all their help. Great staff. Very kind and caring. They will get all my business from here on out. Thank you so much for everything you did for her. The staff were all so kind and respectful when my family took our sweet 18 year old boy Oliver in to say goodbye. We hadn't been there before and it was a last minute call that none of us wished we had to make, but we appreciated everything they did for us - from the assistants to the amazing doctor that helped us and him through the final moments.
